Tooth Fillings

At Calkins Family Dentistry, we know that patients of all ages experience tooth decay. The condition may arise from poor hygiene habits, improper nutrition, or genetics. Whatever the cause, tooth decay can affect the function and shape of a tooth.

Fortunately, Dr. Calkins, our Lincoln, NE dentist can restore that function and appearance with tooth restorations or “fillings”. If you experience tooth sensitivity or pain, let our office know. We’ll examine your mouth for instances of tooth decay or other damage. From there, we’ll work with you to determine the best course of action.

The Three Main Types of Teeth Fillings

While there is a range of filling types, most Lincoln, NE dentists offer these three options:

Composites (Tooth-Colored Fillings)

Composite fillings may be the most aesthetically pleasing option. This material is tooth-colored and can even be matched to the existing tooth. They offer great support and versatility. For example, composites are used to fill chipped teeth—not just cavities. Composite resin is a great option for many people.  It is the most common restoration we place.

Other filling materials include ceramics and glass ionomers and are used in particular instances. If you’d like more details on those materials, just let our support staff know and we will answer your questions.

Of course, the tooth filling you choose will depend on your budget and degree of decay or tooth damage. If you have questions, we are always available to provide further information.

Amalgams (Silver Fillings)

Amalgams, or silver fillings, can be a less costly alternative. The lower price tag, combined with the strength and durability of amalgams, make this a reasonable option.

Gold Fillings

Gold fillings are durable and incredibly strong. However, they can be more expensive than the other options—which hinders their popularity.

“I have been a patient of Dr. Calkins for over 20 years. All of my kids have gone to him since they were toddlers. Very conservative in his approach, never tries to do an expensive treatment if it isn’t necessary. Great at giving numbing shots, can’t even feel the needle.”

LAURA, PATIENT

“I’ve been going to Dr. Calkins for several years and will continue to do so. Tim is very professional, knowledgeable, thorough, and patient. I very much appreciate the time he takes to educate me about dental health, to show me my x-ray, or to explain a procedure. I highly recommend Dr. Calkins and his excellent team.”

AMES, PATIENT

“You know when you come back from your dentist feeling good you know you’ve picked the right one. I could go to any dentist in Lincoln but Dr. Calkins and his staff are it for me. After seeing him for over 20 years I’ve always been treated as if I’m his only patient. Who feels strongly enough about their dentist to actually post?”
